The
Basilica of St Mark's
St Marks Church or The Basilica di San Marco, Venice's most
famous church, was built in 830 to house the body of St.
Mark. One of the most elaborate Basilica's ever built and
a great example of the fusion between East and West, the
architecture of the Byzantium basilica reflects a decidedly
eastern model and is laid out in the shape of a Greek cross
and topped by five beautiful domes. Every inch from the
outside and through the inside is decorated from the replicas
of the Bronze Horses on the roof, to the gold laid interior
mosaics and masterpieces by Titian and Tintoretto. It is
nigh on impossible to take it all in on one viewing.
